Body Lever

The body acting as a rotation lever around the top grip. It exists from takeoff until the center of gravity aligns vertically with the grip, contributing progressively less rotational energy as it shortens.


The body lever is the body acting as a rotation lever around the top grip.

It exists from takeoff until the athlete’s center of gravity is vertically aligned with the top grip, contributing progressively less rotational energy as it shortens, and reaching zero at alignment. After that point there is no lever contributing energy through rotation — the center of gravity is simply being raised.

A longer lever keeps the center of gravity lower for longer, and it does two things. It allows more energy to be put into the system. And it promotes the movement of the vaulter-pole system toward vertical.

The most valuable rotational energy is contributed early, before the lever begins to shorten.

The lever does shorten. Every athlete shortens it eventually, under the physical constraint of holding a long body against load. That is not a fault. What matters is when: an athlete with superior gymnastic ability shortens the lever less and later, keeping it alive longer and putting more energy into the system.

The fault is shortening it artificially — folding into a tuck before the constraint requires it. Doing so brings the center of gravity toward the grip, brings vertical alignment forward in time, and ends the rotational phase early. Whatever energy had not yet entered the system does not enter it.
