Positive Feedback Loop

When the technical model is simple enough and its bottlenecks are removed, it can absorb more speed and more power — physical improvement then shows up directly in the result, which drives further physical improvement.


A positive feedback loop exists when increased physical input produces a direct improvement in the result. The athlete feels the connection between getting faster or acquiring more gymnastic ability and jumping higher, and that connection becomes the strongest available stimulus to develop further.

Whether it exists depends on the technical model. A model with few parts and few timing requirements can absorb additional speed and power without breaking. A complex model cannot: added runway speed disturbs the timing of a complex plant and takeoff, faster rotation after takeoff does not fit the timing structure it was built around, and the athlete settles back to the inputs at which the complex actions still work. That is a loop too, running the wrong way.

The effect is visible across the sport. Many programs have abandoned the long jump as a training tool, treat sprint training as secondary, and use only rudimentary gymnastic training — not for want of interest, but because something in the model blocks the connection between those abilities and the result.

What it displaces. Efficiency as the goal. The objective is not to make the best use of a limited physical input; it is to remove the limit on how much physical input the event can absorb.

The observation originates with Vitaly Petrov in the mid-1980s: that the simplified method, in combination with specific physical training, amplified physical growth.
